Karsten's first effort at producing a steam turbine in miniature powered by his "Steamball" boiler. Karsten developed many other designs, but this was one of few horizontal turbines, most having the turbine in a vertical orientation.

The first and only example of it's kind, Karsten built this prototye example and then went on to commercialize a 2nd generation version. This is the only one in existence and it was obtained in a trade with my good friend Mooseman.

Mini Steam Turbine Spooling Up

Fantastic little Karsten Gintschel direct drive steam turbine power plant. The micro dynamo on the back of the turbine is turning at the full speed of the turbine. Watch as the lights get brighter and brighter as the turbine spools up. These little lamps put out a tremendous amount of light, for such a tiny turbine and generator.

A recent (2007) acquisition of a new design by Karsten. Sort of mimics the SteamBall/Heron's engine in this collection, but presented in a Victorian looking latticework with a more robust boiler and burner. Runs beautifully.

Karsten's Gate Turbine Engine

A true turbine engine in miniature, designed by Karsten Gintschel of Germany. Runs off 12 ml of water placed in the ball and heated by 8 ml of burning alcohol beneath...up and spinning in 90 seconds. Cool jet engine spooling up sound as it increases in speed, just a slice of which was captured for this short video.
